If you stand on any corner, any block, whether in Rochester, or anyplace else where people are trying to make it, you’ll see how community connection isn’t some concept or ideal; it’s survival. When done right, community connection is a symbiotic relationship between people and place, where you give to the place you call home, and in return it gives you a purpose you can’t get anywhere else.
I was born and raised right here in Rochester, New York. Over the past 20 years, I’ve worn many hats in this work: social worker, mentor, direct care staff, group facilitator, and through it all, the heart of my work has never changed. I’ve always believed that people thrive when they’re seen, heard, and supported by others who understand where they’re coming from.
The Art of Showing Up
We talk a lot in the field about “credible messengers,” and I believe that’s more than just shared experience—it’s earned trust. People know when you’re talking to them versus talking with them. They know when you’re really listening, when you’re showing up with humility, and when you’re offering something that could make a real difference for them.
When I engage with community members, whether it’s at a school, a community-based organization, a block party, or a city-wide workforce planning meeting, I’m not just talking about systems change- I’m translating it into something real, something felt, something used.
Outreach, for me, is about relationship-building. Human connection is at the heart of community engagement because it builds bridges for people who need it most. That’s why I joined TogetherNow.
Connection is Our Strength
This work, this Network, this platform, MyWayfinder, is about connecting the dots between community wisdom, provider services, and real people’s lives. It’s about giving our neighbors better access to the support they deserve, without having to jump through hoops or tell their story five times to five different agencies.
When I talk about MyWayfinder with organizations or individuals, I tell them: This is not just another tool. It’s a system that reflects a new way of doing things, together. We’re bringing community to the table because no system can work for people if it’s designed without them.
Engagement is a back and forth that forms connection. It’s more than numbers. When you’re engaging, you’re saying: you matter. Your story matters. Your journey deserves to be honored with care, follow-up, and respect.
That’s what we’re building at TogetherNow, a system where care isn’t just coordinated, it’s compassionate. Where engagement isn’t just outreach, it’s relationship-building. And where someone like me, someone who was shaped by this city, can be part of designing a future where everyone can thrive.
